Sport fishing boat heading out to sea from Cabuya, Costa Rica

The Nicoya Peninsula is one of Central America’s best-kept secrets when it comes to sport fishing. With the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean teeming with life, anglers from around the world travel here for a chance at landing trophy fish.

Why the Nicoya Peninsula Is a Fishing Paradise

The convergence of ocean currents along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica creates a nutrient-rich environment that attracts an incredible diversity of game fish. The underwater topography near Cabuya features dramatic drop-offs, seamounts, and reefs that serve as natural gathering points for both baitfish and predators.

Top Inshore Fishing Spots

Cabo Blanco Reserve Waters

The waters surrounding Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve are among the most productive inshore fishing grounds on the peninsula. The rocky coastline and reef systems here are home to Roosterfish, Snapper, and Jack Crevalle.

Fishing along the edges of the reef during the incoming tide produces the best results, especially early in the morning when Roosterfish are actively feeding near the surface.

Cabuya Island Reef

Just offshore from the village of Cabuya lies a productive reef system that consistently produces excellent catches. The reef attracts Snapper, Grouper, and occasionally large Cubera Snapper that patrol the deeper edges.

Top Offshore Fishing Spots

The Drop-Off (20-30 miles out)

The continental shelf drops off dramatically about 20-30 miles from shore, creating a deepwater fishing paradise. This is where you will find the big pelagics: Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Mahi-Mahi.

The best offshore fishing occurs from May through November, when warm water currents bring massive schools of baitfish and the predators that follow them.

FADs and Current Lines

Floating debris and current lines offshore are magnets for Mahi-Mahi (Dorado) and Yellowfin Tuna. Our captains use their experience and modern electronics to locate these productive areas, giving you the best chance at multiple hookups.
