If you have never been deep sea fishing before, your first charter can feel a bit intimidating. What should you wear? Do you need to bring your own equipment? What if you get seasick? Do not worry — this guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is Deep Sea Fishing?

Deep sea fishing (also called offshore fishing or sport fishing) involves heading out to deeper ocean waters, typically 10-30+ miles from shore, to target large pelagic fish species. These include Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, and Mahi-Mahi — fish that can weigh anywhere from 20 to 500+ pounds.

What to Expect on Your First Charter

Before the Trip

  1. Get a good night’s sleep — you will be on the water for several hours
  2. Eat a light breakfast — avoid greasy or heavy foods
  3. Take seasickness medication if you are concerned — Dramamine or natural ginger tablets work well, taken 30-60 minutes before departure

On the Boat

Your captain and crew will handle all the technical aspects. Here is the typical flow:

  1. Departure: Head out from the dock in the early morning (usually 6:00 AM)
  2. Transit: Cruise to the fishing grounds (30-60 minutes for offshore)
  3. Setup: The crew sets up the rods, rigs, and bait
  4. Trolling: The boat moves slowly while dragging lures through the water
  5. Strike!: When a fish hits, the crew helps you get in the fighting chair
  6. The fight: You reel in the fish with guidance from the crew
  7. Landing: The crew helps bring the fish to the boat
